Egg mayo voted Britain’s favourite sandwich

It topped a poll to find the 10 most popular sarnies, winning a quarter of the vote.

Another classic, the cheese sandwich, took second place with 21 per cent. Ham was third with 17 per cent and chicken fourth on 13 per cent.

There was a tie in fifth place between tuna and bacon, lettuce and tomato. Both won seven per cent of the vote.

Prawn mayo, jam, crisps and peanut butter completed the top 10 fillings in the poll by PromotionalCodes.org.uk.

It said: “Flavours like cheese are still popular but new ones are constantly being invented.

“When the sandwich was created, nobody thought peanut butter would be a good filling.”

The Fourth Earl of Sandwich, born in 1718, is said to have first put meat between two slices of bread so he could eat and carry on gambling.
